Hi there!  Just wanted to quickly share a few new things I've listed in my Etsy shop.  Due to many requests, I've created 3 little Mermaid Girl pattern kits.  The pattern is basically the same as the original with a few minor tweaks and modifications.
Clock-wise from top left:  Nerissa, Pearl and Lorelei.
Also, I have 4 copies of my new book, My Felt Doll available for sale.  I wasn't sure if it was a good idea as the cost of shipping is quite high, but if there's enough interest , I'll see about getting more copies in.
A sneak peek at the little Schoolgirl,
And the Woodland Maiden.
Wishing you all a happy Thursday! xo

Hi there!  I'm so excited to share the most wonderful news today!  A few months ago, I was contacted by the editor of Mollie Makes magazine who asked me to share a project for their readers.  Imagine my delight!!  Oh my goodness, this is my absolute favourite crafting magazine, so of course I said yes!!
It was decided that I would contribute the pattern for my Flora kitty cat and they've made up the cutest little pattern kits which are included as free gifts with the purchase of the magazine.  How fabulous is that??!!  So, for anyone interested in picking up a copy, it goes on sale in the UK today, 26th May 2016 - issue no.67, available in the next couple of days everywhere else :)

Isn't she cute?  The kit comes with everything you'll need to make her, including the felt, fabric, safety eyes, ribbon, thread and even a sewing needle!  And I've provided lots of detailed photos showing each step of the way.
You can click on this link to get a sneak peak of the issue:  http://www.molliemakes.com/craft-2/mollie-makes-issue-67/

Have a happy day! xo

A Special Giveaway!

My goodness, has it really been that long since I last posted??  I've had such a strange last few months!  Spent most of Spring and Summer dealing with severe allergic asthma which began as a reaction that I had to a series of de-sensitising allergy shots.  To make a long story short, I now have a new allergist who is thoroughly competent, knowledgeable and professional and who has the most wonderful bedside manners!  I'm just so happy to be back to normal again!
I do have some other good news to share with you all, one of my patterns has been featured in the new edition of Better Homes and Gardens Holiday Crafts magazine!  Yay!!
You should be able to find a copy in stores now and it'll run through till Christmas.  There are also lots of other fun and festive projects in the book, so do grab a copy, it's quite fabulous!
You know how sometimes you just need a bit of a change?  Well, I've been itching to try something different lately, so I got some clay and started making a few things.  First I made a little ellie for my Mum.  She loves elephants and I wanted to make her a sweet little gift to thank her for all she does.  She helps me get all the orders packed and mailed everyday and I know that without her, I would not be able to run my business as effectively as we do.  She is amazing and I am so blessed to have her!
I really enjoyed working with the clay and ended up making a few more things.. a llama, baby bear, a whale, a fox brooch and a couple of cactus ring holders!
Now for the best part!  I'm having a giveaway for the fox brooch, the whale and the two cactus ring holders (PS.. they will not include the rings).  If you'd like to have a chance of winning one of them, please leave a message below, or on my facebook page and include your name and email address in the following format: md(at)shaw(dot)ca.  The draw will be held on Sunday, September 25th for the 4 winners.  To make it fair, I'll pre-wrap each gift and randomly send one to each of the winners, that way it will be a complete surprise for the recipient:)  I will also contact each winner for their mailing address after the draw.

Best of luck everyone!!  And do be on the lookout for more of my clay creations!  I am thoroughly addicted and am already plotting my next creation as I write!

Hi there!  Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian friends! Words can never express how thankful I am to all of you for supporting my work and for all the kind words and wonderful wishes you've sent my way! Thank you all SO much!
As I sit here typing, warm and cozy in my home, hubby in the kitchen preparing a wonderful meal that we'll share with our family later on tonight, I am thinking about all the people who have lost everything in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.  People who will now be struggling to find food and shelter and who have lost loved ones.  It's a devastating thought, and I cannot imagine having to live through the reality of it!
I want to help, even if it's in a small way, so I'm donating 100% of the proceeds of every pattern sold from my Etsy shop over the next couple of days - Sunday, Oct 9th and Monday, Oct 10th to The Canadian Red Cross.
If you'd like share your support, please pop in to visit my shop and pick up a pattern or two.  Together we can do our best to help them to recover.

Thank you!!

A New Start...

Hi!  Happy Wednesday everyone!:)  I just wanted to share a bit of good news with you all.  I've been thinking about taking a little break from creating patterns for now and instead want to focus on making dolls to sell from time to time.  Over the last few years I've had many requests from people looking to purchase my ready-made dolls and because I've been so busy designing patterns and running my shop, I've not been able to offer them.
Well, I'm happy to say that that's about to change!  I'm hoping to be able to offer a small batch of dolls every couple of weeks or so, depending of course on how busy my shop is and whether I have other projects on the go.  Here are a few photos of three of the dolls I've been working on so far - they're not quite done yet, but I hope you like them! :)

I've embroidered a glittery star on each of their cheeks - hence the name 'Starlet Dolls'.

Each doll will wear a cute pair of frilly knickers.
Aren't they sweet??  I might just have to design a pair for me too! :) lol!
I've already made a stash of dresses for the next batch of girls :)  Each dress is lined with a pretty petticoat.
My wonderful Mum has kindly agreed to knit each of them a little wrap cardigan which I think just adds the best touch!

This sweet girl is wearing a feather boa collar while she waits for her cardigan.

They're quite tall, measuring a tad more than 17 inches in length.  These dolls are not suitable for very young children and should be handled gently or used as display dolls.

PLEASE NOTE:  To find out when the dolls will be ready for sale, please keep in touch by following my Instagram and Facebook Page.  I will post a release date and time a couple of days before listing the dolls in my Etsy shop.  I'm sorry, but to be fair to everyone, I cannot take reserves.  Also, I will not be offering custom dolls.  Each doll will be one-of-a-kind, completely unique and made from the highest quality materials.

I'm so looking forward to making many more of these little beauties and I hope that you'll pop in to visit my social media pages often to see what else I'll been working on!

Have a lovely week!

Oh hello!  I've got some wonderful news to share!  I know that I mentioned in a recent post that I'd be taking a break from pattern making for a while, but sometimes you just never know when an idea is going to strike!  As I worked on my idea, I just knew that I had to create a pattern for it!
These little Floral Kitties and Bunnies are a delight to make!  I especially loved creating their floral crowns and sweet little tutus!
The Kitty measures about 5 inches tall, while the Bunny is about 7 inches to the tip of the ears.
The pattern is now ready and will be available in my Etsy shop tomorrow!
Hope you'll want to make one or two!

Free Pattern - Bunny in a Blanket

$

Hello lovelies, I hope you've all been well!  I'm sorry it's been so long since I last posted anything here on my blog, but I'm finding it harder these days to keep on top of things.  Though I really enjoy answering the many convo's and messages I receive daily, as well as packing up and mailing orders, I do find that I miss having the time to work on new ideas for patterns like I used to.
As always, I am so grateful to you all for your support and I just want to thank you for your lovely notes and for sharing photos of the things you've been making using my patterns - they truly do brighten up my day!!
Because this is my first blog post of the year, I thought I'd begin by surprising you with a sweet little gift - a free pattern tutorial to make a little Bunny in a Blanket!
These tiny bunnies are easy and fun to make and they're the perfect size (just a smidgen over 3 inches tall) to tuck into an empty mint tin to take along on adventures!  In fact, my 10 year old niece, Amy, was recently over for an afternoon and we made a pair together!
Here's what you'll need to make one Baby Bunny:
✼Sewing supplies such as embroidery scissors, dressmaker's scissors, pins, needles
✼Sewing machine and thread to match fabric for blanket
✼Embroidery thread/floss
✼Disappearing ink marker and ruler
✼Stuffing tool such as an orange stick or chopstick
✼Polyfil
✼Pink and Blue coloured pencils
✼Tiny pompom for tail
✼3x5 inch white felt for bunny's head and body
✼3.5x3.5 inch light pink or blue fabric for blanket (lightweight fabric such as lawn)
✼3.5x3.5 inch white flannelette fabric for blanket
Optional:
- Empty mint tin such an Altoids or Barkley's mint tin
- 2x4 inch white felt for pillow
Please read through all instructions first before beginning this project.
Please Note:
Print pattern onto regular printer paper.  There is no need to re-size the pattern or to add a seam allowance.
Cut out pattern pieces.  Pin paper pattern pieces directly onto the felt and carefully cut around pieces for the Head and Body, and, if you're making a bed for your bunny, cut out the Pillow pieces.
I've used one strand of embroidery thread/floss to sew up all felt seams and to embroider the facial features, arms and legs and floral detail on the pillow.  Keep your stitches small, neat and evenly spaced.
Head
: To mark the grid on the bunny's Head, keep the pattern pieces pinned in place and gently lift the outer edges, using your disappearing ink marker to mark the beginning of the lines onto the felt. Then remove the pattern piece and use the ruler to connect the lines. This grid will help with the placement of the facial features.
: Using the Head pattern piece as a guide, transfer the facial markings onto the front head felt piece with your disappearing ink marker.
: Embroider the eyes onto the face using black embroidery thread. Begin by making one straight stitch (place it on a slight upward slant, beginning at the inner corner of the eye and ending at the outer corner of the eye), then make another one directly below it, again, beginning the stitch right at the inner corner and ending a couple of millimeters before the end of the top stitch.  This will give the appearance that it is slightly wider at the inner corner and more pointy at the outer corner.  Make another tiny stitch directly below the top stitch, this time beginning it right at the inner corner and angling it slightly downwards.  Repeat for the other eye.
: Make a tiny 'v' for the snout with black thread.  Then switch to pink embroidery thread and embroider the lower line for the snout.  Embroider tiny whiskers on the cheeks and in the lower ears.
: Place head front onto head back, wrong sides together and pin.  Starting at the dot just below the right ear, whip stitch all the away around both ears, stopping when you reach the indent at the bottom of the left ear.
: Carefully stuff each ear using your orange stick to gently guide the stuffing up and into the tips of the ears and then filling up the rest of each ear.
: Continue whip stitching around the bunny's head, working around to the lower dot on the right hand side.
: Stuff face and whip stitch the opening closed adding more stuffing to round out the area as you go.
 Body
: Follow the directions above for marking the grid onto the bunny's front Body.
: Using the Body pattern piece as a guide, transfer the markings for the little arms and legs and tiny belly button onto the front Body felt piece with your disappearing ink marker.
: Using a tiny running stitch, outline the arms and legs (I used pink thread for the little girl bunny and blue for the boy), then stitch a tiny 'x' for the belly button.
: Place front body onto back body, wrong sides together and pin.  Starting at the dot on the bottom right, whip stitch all the way around the body to the dot on the opposite side.
: Stuff body firmly and whip stitch opening closed, adding more stuffing to round out the bottom if needed.
: Use your coloured pencils to colour in the arms and legs (I've used pink for the girl and blue for the boy).  Layer the colour on lightly as too much friction may cause the felt to become fuzzy.  Gently swirl the pink coloured pencil onto the cheeks and inner ears.
Attaching Head to Body
: Position head onto the top area of the body.  Pin in place.
: Turn the bunny around so that the back of the body is facing you.  Insert a threaded needle just below the top seam of the neck and out through the top right hand corner of the neck.
: Working clockwise around the head, ladder stitch the head onto the body, keeping your stitches neat and small.  Repeat a couple of times to secure head onto the body.
 Adding a Tail
: Position a tiny pompom onto the lower area of the Bunny's back body.  Pin in place. (a.)
: Insert a threaded needle up through the lower seam (this will hide the knot) and out through the center of the pompom. (b.)
: Take a tiny stitch, inserting the needle back in through the pompom and out through the bottom seam. Repeat a few times to secure tail in place. (c.)
Blanket (Machine Sewn)
: To prepare the blanket for sewing, position the Blanket pattern piece onto the center of the wrong side of  on of the fabric pieces and trace the outline onto the fabric, making sure to mark the dots for the opening. Pin front and back of blanket together, right sides facing.
: Set your sewing machine stitch to straight stitch.
: Place fabric onto the bed of the sewing machine, aligning the needle perfectly with teh edge of the traced outline just below the dot on the left hand side of the opening.
: Sew directly onto marked line, beginning and ending your seam with a back stitch and leaving a long tail of thread for sewing up the opening.
: Trim excess fabric around edges, leaving a little tab between the dots.  Turn right side out and press.
: Tuck tab in, pinning the two sides together.  Ladder stitch closed.
How to Wrap Up your Bunny
: With flannelette side facing up, position blanket in a diamond shape on your work surface.
: Place bunny in center, aligning the tips of the ears with the top point of the blanket.  Fold bottom tip up to cover bunny's body. (a.)
: Fold right side of blanket over the front of the body, folding the top edge over (this will expose the flannelette) so that the folded edge of the blanket curves around the bunny's face and under the chin.  Pin in place for now. (b.)
: Repeat step (b.) for the left side of the blanket, removing the pin as you wrap the side around at the front.  Pin in place. (c.)
: I have chosen to secure the blanket permanently around my bunnies.  To do so, insert a threaded needle underneath the fold of the top flap (this will ensure that the knot is hidden under the flap) and then directly out through the side seam.  Make a couple of tiny stitches to secure the edge of the flap onto the side of the blanket, making sure that your stitches are small and tidy.
You will now have a teeny, tiny, sweet little bunny all wrapped up and ready for a nap!
Optional:Bunny Bed
You can now prepare a little bed for your bunny by using an empty mint tin such as Altoids or Barkley's Mints, or similar.  Make sure the tin is clean and dry before you begin.
: To make the pillow, embroider a tiny flower and a few leaves onto the bottom corner of the front pillow piece.
: Place front onto back and blanket stitch all the way around, leaving an opening at the bottom.  Stuff and blanket stitch opening closed.
Position pillow into the tin and tuck the little bunny/ies into bed.  Two will fit in perfectly side by side.
Aren't they just the cutest??!!  I just want to squeal every time I look at them!! :)
I hope you'll have fun making them and I'd love to see how they turn out!  Please feel free to post your pics of them on Instagram - you can tag me with the hashtag #Gingermelon, or share some pics on my Facebook page. You're welcome to sell your little creations, I just ask that you offer GINGERMELON design credit in any written description please.
Please be sure to visit my blog again soon as I'm almost ready to release another pattern I've been working on!  Here's a sneak peek..
Happy sewing everyone!!

Hi!!  Got a lovely surprise for you all!  My newest pattern, the Springtime Friends is now ready and available in my Etsy shop!!
I'm super excited to share this pattern with you!  It includes pattern pieces to make either a bunny or kitty doll and I've created two different outfit options to choose from - a pretty Summer dress or a cute pair of shorts with buttoned suspenders.  The pattern also includes a faux fur cape and scarf.
I love the different options in this pattern - I made a Mum and Dad bunny and then made them each a teeny tiny baby bunny to hold.  You can find the free tutorial to make one yourself on my blog, justCLICKHERE.
If you love hand embroidery, you'll love the concept of creating your own embroidered masterpiece!  You can customize these dolls to your hearts content!!  I've provided lots of photos showing close-up details of the stitches I've used, so you can embellish as much or as little as you'd like.

The dolls and outfits are made from fabric and are machine sewn.  Finished bunnies measure about 14inches tall, while kitties measure about 11 inches tall.
 Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

Shop Update - New Stuffs!!

Great news y'all!!  I've got a few new goodies in store for you!  My fav of all is the scrumptious Hand Over Dyed fabric!  It is SO GORGEOUS!!  When I first got into doll making, this is the felt I used to make my Pocket Pixies, Woodland and Sweet Stufflings, Gingerbelles, etc.  I have wanted to offer this felt in my Etsy shop forever and let me tell you, nothing compares to it!  I have hand chosen 42 beautiful colours, which I know you'll love and they're available in 8.5 x 13 inch sheets.
Aren't they stunning!!??  Just one problem though...  unfortunately, I've become so allergic to them that I have to wear a double mask while working with them :(  Oh, I can't tell you how upset I am about this!!  I had so many plans!!  So, I will only be selling what I have on hand and when they're gone, that'll be it, I won't be able to stock anymore.  Because of this, I'm selling them for a steal - $5.00 a sheet which is just barely covering the cost of them.
Here's a look at the swatch card.  Because the fabric is hand dyed, each sheet will have slight or noticeable colour variations.  It is also great for wool appliqué, penny rugs and rug hooking.
Click on them to see the close-up view.
Below are a few examples of the things I've made with this wool in the past.
Gingerbelles

Sweet Stufflings

 Woodland Stufflings

Pocket Pixie

Dainty Darlings

I also have some new metallic and patterned felt sheets available.
 Metallic felts (above):
: gold stripes on white or black
: gold dots on white or black
: silver stripes on white or black
: silver dots on white or black
Patterned felt (above):
: red or black dots on white
: black or red stripes on white
Another pic showing the Snow Couple I made with the hand over dyed fabric.  Trust me, once you use this felt, you'll be hooked!! :)

Hope you'll pop in and visit my shop before they're all sold out!
Have a lovely weekend!

Li'l Luvs Baby Animals

Hi everyone!  I'm sorry it's been so long since I lasted posted anything, but I've been working on a new collection of baby animal patterns and I'm so happy to say that the first two are finally ready!  I've named these wee animal babies 'Li'l Luvs' as they're just so adorably cute and tiny, measuring at just over 7 inches tall.
I began this project a few months ago with the intention of making six different animal dolls, each with the same body proportions so that their outfits could be mixed and matched between them.  Well, it's been quite and undertaking to say the least!  I can't tell you how many different sizes and shapes these little characters have been through in the design process, but I think I'm finally happy with the end result and I'm ready to share the first two patterns with you all!  Please meet the Li'l Luvs Ellie and Badger!  And yes! they can stand on their own!!
Each pattern will include instructions and pattern pieces to make the doll (either Badger or Ellie), along with a little felt sundress, a cute pair of scalloped felt undies, shoes and a fabric outfit - a sweet little romper for the elephant and a darling little dress for the badger!

I would recommend some hand and machine sewing experience to complete these patterns, though I have provided many detailed photos and easy to follow instructions throughout, so a novice sewer should be able to work through them if they take their time.

Here's a few more pics of the little cuties.

I just love how adorable they look in their little undies and shoes!

The patterns for the Li'l Luvs are now available in my Etsy shop!

Have a wonderful week!

New Pattern Release - Sparkle Starlet Dolls!!

Hello there lovelies!  I'm just so happy to finally have this pattern ready to share with you all!!  It has been a huge undertaking, but oh-so worth it now that it's done!  I've spent countless hours, weeks even, when all was said and done, photographing the steps for the pattern, writing up the instructions and finally taking what seemed like hundreds of photos for the listing pics as the weather was so not co-operating with me!  It feels like an enormous weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I think I  may just have to take tomorrow off!
These sweet girls are machine sewn and measure about 17 inches tall.  I've included a couple of templates for the doll's facial features.  These will allow you to create different eye shapes and will also give you the option to make dimples, freckles or stars.  You can then choose whether to embroider or paint the features onto your doll, or you may want to try a combination of the two.
The Starlet's hair is secured onto her head with stitching and glue and it can be gently styled many ways. Please click on all the photos to see the details.
The pattern includes instructions and pattern pieces to make an adorable pair of sequined/embroidered undies, slouchy leg warmers and a pretty summer dress lined with a tulle petticoat.
 Rainbow freckles :)
 Such a sweet face!
What little girl (or big one) wouldn't love to play with one of these?
They're fun and easy to make!
 I think this one's my fave! :)

 Painted facial features below.
The Sparkle Starling Doll pattern will be available in my Etsy shop later on tonight!
Happy sewing everyone!!
